Ticking Time Bomb… TICKS!
By Kay Hisano | Dated September 11, 2025
There’s nothing better than long summer days in North S
hore—lazy afternoons in the backyard, early morning dog walks, or weekend bush trails along the harbour. But while we’re soaking up the sunshine, there’s one summer hazard our pets need us to watch out for: paralysis ticks.

Why Worry About Ticks?
Paralysis ticks are tiny, but their toxin can pack a serious punch. Dogs and cats bitten by these ticks may suddenly become weak, struggle to breathe, or even collapse. Left untreated, paralysis tick poisoning can be fatal.
These ticks thrive in humid coastal areas like ours and can be found anywhere from bushland to garden lawns—so even pets who don’t wander far are at risk.
How to Stay One Step Ahead
Daily tick checks are essential, but prevention products are your best line of defence. Different pets need different routines, so here’s a quick guide:
🐶 For Dogs:
-
Yearly injection available at the vet (easy, no reminders needed)
-
Oral chews (monthly or every 3 months, depending on the brand)
-
Spot-on treatments (applied to the skin every 2–4 months, depending on the brand)
🐱 For Cats:
-
Monthly spot-on treatments (some protect against both fleas and ticks)
-
Longer-acting options available every 2–3 months
Not all flea products stop ticks—so if you’re not sure your pet is fully covered, give us a ring and we can help you.
Signs Your Pet Might Have Tick Paralysis
Even with good prevention, it’s smart to know the red flags:
-
Wobbly walk or sudden weakness
-
Trouble swallowing or breathing
-
A strange change in bark or meow
-
Vomiting, gagging, or coughing
-
Tiredness or loss of appetite
If you notice any of these, treat it as urgent and call us right away. The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome.
