Axel On The Mend
By Kay Hisano | Dated February 17, 2026
Axel, a 7-year-old Doberman, recently came into the clinic after a puncture wound and reluctance to put weight on his left front leg. He had been running around the backyard along the fencing when the injury occurred. On examination and radiographs, we discovered that he had sustained a fracture of his left front humerus! Ouch!

Dr. John proceeded with surgery to stabilise the fracture with the placement of intramedullary pin and a plate with screws. Axel handled the procedure very well and has been closely monitored post-operatively.

It has now been three weeks since surgery, and we are happy to report that Axel is slowly becoming more comfortable using his left front leg again. While he is starting to put some weight on it, he still has a recommended period of 6-8 weeks of strict rest to ensure the bone heals fully without any setbacks. Limited activity during this time are crucial for a successful recovery.
We are extremely pleased with how Axel is progressing. He has been brave throughout the process, and his gradual improvement is a positive sign that the surgery was successful. With continued care, patience, and adherence to the post-operative instructions, we are confident that he will regain full function of his leg and return to his usual playful and active self. We look forward to seeing him back to full strength and enjoying his backyard adventures again.
