Important Notice: 1080 Poison for Fox Control in Local National Parks

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has announced the use of 1080 poison for fox control in several locations from February 1, 2025, to July 31, 2025. The poison will be deployed as ground baits and canid pest ejectors (CPEs) in the following areas:

• Garigal National Park
• Lane Cove National Park (baits only, no ejectors)
• Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
• Sydney Harbour National Park – North Head (including the Quarantine Station), Dobroyd Head, Chowder Head & Bradleys Head (managed by NPWS)
• The North Head Sanctuary (managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust)
• The Australian Institute of Police Management, North Head

This program aims to protect threatened Australian wildlife, including the southern brown bandicoot, as well as endangered populations of little penguins and long-nosed bandicoots.

Keeping Pets Safe

While this program is essential for conservation, 1080 poison is highly toxic to domestic pets. 1080 poison used by NPWS contains blue or red dye, which may be visible in an affected animal’s mouth. Red marker beads may also be seen in vomit or feces.We urge pet owners to exercise caution in and around these areas.

Signs of 1080 Poisoning in Pets:

• Excessive urination and defecation
• Frenzied or abnormal behavior
• Seizures or convulsions
• Difficulty breathing
• Vomiting
• Coma

What to Do if Your Pet is Affected

If you suspect your dog has ingested even a small amount of 1080 poison, seek immediate veterinary attention—this toxin acts quickly and is often fatal without urgent treatment.
