This week’s pet of the week is Mochi, a little pup with a bummer of a problem.

Mochi, a 9 week old Japanese Spitz was bought into Gordon Vet as he had been experiencing diarrhoea and a loss of appetite for a couple of days. Due to Mochi’s constant straining to go to the toilet, his rectum had pushed through his anus resulting in a prolapsed rectum. Vets needed to get to the bottom of his diarrhoea and repair the prolapse. Diarrhoea can have many causes. In Mochi’s case, it was most likely stress related after being introduced into a new home and a change of diet.
Mochi underwent a general anaesthetic to correct the prolapse and a small stitch was put in place to prevent it from re-occurring.
Mochi stayed in hospital for several days so we could provide pain relief and anti diarrhoea medication. By the end of the week Mochi had returned to his bright and bouncy self and was able to go home to his family.

Helen joined the Gordon Vet team early in 2014 and our clients have really enjoyed getting to know her. She loves being a vet and takes a keen interest in all of her patients. Her gentle, friendly nature helps pets to feel relaxed when they visit the vet. Helen lives locally and has 3 children. At least one of her children seems destined to be a vet! When not ferrying her children around, Helen cares for her menagerie of pets. These include Chloe the dog, Obi and Leia the cats, Little Cocky the galah and Rosie the very tame eclectus parrot who all happily coexist at her house. In her spare time, Helen likes to be active outdoors, running, kayaking, camping or playing any manner of sport with her children.
