Joey’s Pet of the Week – Geronimo’s Car Accident

Heya peeps! How are you all? How hard is it getting back into a normal week after all the fun of Christmas and a bunch of Public Holidays? I’m not sure about you, but this clinic cat needs a day off! Or a nap. I guess that’s the only good thing about all of this rainy weather, no one calls you lazy when you sleep all day!!

This week we welcomed back Dr Matt Leong, who will be locuming with us until the end of the month. Dr Matt has worked with us before and we’re super happy to have him back. He is loads of fun and is a very good Vet. Be sure to say hi to him if you see him.

And how exciting is it that Nurse Hollie and her husband Mark are going to have a baby?!? I’ll be able to retire from being a clinic cat and become a full time Funcle (Fur Uncle) at this rate!!

My star this week is the handsome Geronimo, a 4year old Mini Schnauzer from Killara who came into us not long before we were about the close after he got hit by a car. After assessing his injuries and giving him some pain relief, it was decided that while his injuries didn’t seem life threatening, Geronimo was going to need over night monitoring, so we transferred him to our good friends at Northside Emergency Veterinary Service. NEVS also did an assessment on Geronimo and diagnosed him with anisocoria, which is where one pupil is a different size to the other, which was due to the collision with the car, he had a bleeding wound on his chin and he was limping on his left hind leg. The good news was that there were no obvious fractures, his chest sounded clear and his tummy wasn’t painful. The biggest concern was the head trauma that Geronimo had suffered. NEVS started him on IV fluids, gave him more pain relief and set him up for a neurological exam every 2hours to make sure there was no deterioration. At 11pm that night, Geronimo was resting comfortably and his anisocria was resolving. By 430am, Geronimo’s neuro jobs were normal, his eyes were perfect so NEVS took a look at the wound on Geronimo’s chin. There was just a graze, no stitches were needed, so it was cleaned with saline. Geronimo was certainly a lucky puppy!! The only problem Geronimo had was the pain relief he was having made him vomit.

Our good friends NEVS transferred Geronimo back to us later that morning. Dr Scott Lackenby checked Geronimo over and was really happy with how he looked. He wasn’t limping and the rest of his exam was normal. Geronimo was ok to go home!! Nurse Emma spoke to Geronimo’s Dad who was in Melbourne and would’t be back in Sydney until the following day, so Geronimo got to hang out with us. Dr Scott sent Geronimo home with some pain relief, different to the sort that was making him vomit, and told Geronimo to take it easy for a few days. What a lucky dog!!
