Sophie, an 8 year old Chihuahua has had a run in with something unknown, in her backyard. It appears that the skin on her chest was caught and torn, and as a result, a very large flap of skin from her chest was hanging off. Her vigilant family bought her in immediately to see the Vets and Sophie was prepped for surgery to repair the wound straight away.
Once Sophie was anesthetised and stable; the wound was flushed and cleaned, the large skin flap was trimmed around the edges so that the chances of it dying off was minimal. Dr Catherine then sutured the wound closed using the remaining skin.
A drain was inserted into the wound so that any fluid that built up could leave the area and reduce the potential risk of infection.
After the surgery, Sophie was given some pain relief and antibiotics and had a short stay in Hospital so that we could restrict her movement and help the wound to heal. Her recovery was fast and she was incredibly brave in Hospital. The stiches were removed in stages over a few days, and she is looking almost good as new!
