New Tick Borne Disease in Australia
By John Morgan | Dated April 7, 2021
You may have read a lot about a new disease called Ehrlichiosis arriving on our shores. This tick borne disease is devastating to dogs and can even infect humans if ticks were to attach to them. The symptoms in dogs can include the following:
- fever
- lethargy
- enlarged lymph nodes
- loss of appetite
- discharge from the eyes and nose
- weight loss
- anaemia and bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds or bleeding under the skin that looks like small spots, patches or bruising.
Fortunately, in Sydney, the climate isn’t quite right for the host: the brown dog tick and your pet is unlikely to be exposed any time soon. We will alert you to any changes on this front as it develops.
The main areas infection has been detected is in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. If you are planning a road trip with your dog in these areas please ensure to read more information from the Department of National Pest & Disease Outbreaks here and keep your pets tick prevention completely up to date!
