The danger of raw chicken meat

As published in the Australian Journal of Veterinary Medicine in January this year, a recent study by vets at the University of Melbourne has led to a new recommendation NOT to feed dogs and cats raw chicken, particularly raw chicken necks. Consumption of these products has been shown to increase the risk of developing a particularly severe neurological condition, called acute polyradiculoneuritis, by 70 times. It is possible that this may be associated with a bacterial infection caused by Campylobacter sp. Acute polyradiculoneuritis leads to paralysis of the legs and in severe cases can lead to paralysis of the muscles necessary to breathe, and may be fatal.
In light of these research findings, Gordon Vet recommends not to feed your pet any raw chicken products, (and to continue to avoid cooked bones).
