What a week we’ve just had! I hope your household didn’t suffer the same affliction we’ve had here at Gordon Vet. To be blunt, we had a week of vomiters. Now don’t stress, not a single patient was vomiting because of a virus going around, so you’re safe there. They all presented with vomiting from different causes, and we’ll have a look at three particularly sweet dogs from last week.
First up, we saw the teddy-bear-like Samoyed, Theo. He had been vomiting for 24 hours, and was known to have a predilection for chewing toys. Additionally they were renovating at home, so the possibilities of items he could have swallowed were endless! When we palpated Theo’s abdomen we could feel a firm object in his intestines, and this was confirmed on abdominal x-rays. So, into theatre we went, and sure enough there was a rubber object (we still don’t know what is actually is), wedged in his intestine. Theo bounced back from surgery very happily, and it was lovely to see him today for his post op check, looking like nothing had ever happened.
The day after Theo came in, a sad-looking Molly was brought in by her dad. She is known to be rather partial to the sausages the children don’t finish, which unfortunately brought her undone this time. Miss Molly was vomiting, not wanting to eat and had a very sore abdomen. A blood test revealed that she had pancreatitis, so Molly had a quiet weekend in hospital on a drip, with antibiotics and pain relief too. Thankfully, today she is bright and bouncy, eating well and keeping her food down, and this afternoon will be reunited with her loving family.
That same day, little Peppa Pig the cocker spaniel was feeling very under the weather too. She had been vomiting overnight and wasn’t the bright happy girl she usually is. When she had presented similarly previously she had had a paralysis tick, so as a precaution she stayed with us for the day and was shaved. Thankfully no ticks were found, and we suspect she was vomiting due to an upset tummy from a change in her diet. Peppa Pig should be back to normal in a couple of days on a bland diet. And might we add, she is rocking her new look!
