Teddy’s Lucky Escape

We are constantly amazed at the things puppies decide might make a tasty treat. Much to his owner’s horror, Teddy the 12 week old Spoodle puppy was found snacking on a glass Christmas tree ornament one afternoon.
By the time Teddy had arrived to the clinic, he had started coughing up some blood. We were concerned we might find glass lodged in the back of his mouth or in his oesophagus. After some sedation to calm him down, we were able to see a small cut on the inside of his gum but thankfully no glass pieces visible in his throat. Teddy then had some x-rays to check his stomach and oesophagus. To our surprise, Teddy had multiple small fragments of glass in his stomach. Luckily, none of the glass got trapped in his oesophagus on the way down.
Teddy still looked very happy and pleased with himself so we decided not to rush him in to surgery to retrieve the glass. Instead, he was given a medication to help heal any damage to the lining of his gut and lots of soft food to try and protect his intestines from the glass as it moved through. He was not out of danger though and we were ready to go straight to surgery if he showed any signs of illness.
With close monitoring from his owners, Teddy managed to pass most of the glass by the next day. Almost one week later, Teddy is doing great. He is playful, eating and toileting well. Definitely a very lucky puppy!
