New rules for selling or giving away dogs or cats
By Helen Burns | Dated July 18, 2019
From 1st July 2019, if you are selling or giving away a kitten, cat, puppy or dog, you will need to include an identification number in all advertisements. This number can be a microchip number, a breeder identification number or a rehoming organisation number. It applies regardless of the age of the animal, whether you are a breeder or not, and whether you are giving the pet away or selling it.
These changes enable people who are looking to buy or adopt a cat or dog, to search the NSW Pet Registry to confirm the animal’s breed, age, whether it has been desexed, and whether it is registered.
In order for these changes to be effective, it is really important that pet owners keep information in the NSW Pet Registry up to date.
Cat and dog owners can easily create an online profile to help ensure they are reunited with their pet if it becomes lost.
The Registry allows you to update your contact details, report your pet as missing, change the ownership of pets, and pay the lifetime registration fee.
