Kennel Cough Outbreak August 2020

We have seen an increased number of cases of kennel cough in dogs at Gordon Vets over the last few weeks.

“Kennel cough” is a highly infectious disease commonly caused by a bacteria (Eg Bordatela bronchiseptica) or a virus (Eg Parainfluenza). These nasty diseases are spread by direct contact with other dogs but will survive for short periods of time in the environment.

The most common sign is a harsh dry cough. This may be productive (produce phlegm) or unproductive and can be mistaken for vomiting or looking like they have something stuck in their throat. Some dogs become lethargic and very occasionally go off their food. Rarely, kennel cough signs can progress to a lung infection (pneumonia) which is why we recommend you see a vet for this condition as antibiotics may be required in some cases. While the symptoms sound bad, most cases of kennel cough without pneumonia make a full recovery.

Vaccination is the most effective way of preventing serious infection, so make sure your dog is fully vaccinated for kennel cough. Unfortunately, some strains of viruses or bacteria are not covered by regular vaccines so some dogs develop signs regardless of vaccination. Some other handy tips are to avoid overcrowded dog parks or areas, bring your own portable water bowl to avoid shared bowls and if your dog is showing any signs (much like us at the moment!) please keep them at home away from other dogs until they stop coughing.
