Winnie, a two-year-old retriever, was brought to the clinic with a persistent cough and a high temperature. On examination, her lung sounds were increased, and chest radiographs revealed a strong suspicion of pneumonia.
To confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment, Dr. Helen performed a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)—a procedure that involves passing a small amount of sterile fluid into the lower airways and retrieving it for analysis. This allows us to examine cells and identify any infections present in the lungs, helping tailor the most appropriate treatment.
After initial stabilisation, Winnie was transferred to a 24-hour care facility for close monitoring and further treatment. Pneumonia cases often require intensive support to ensure proper recovery.
Winnie a true fighter that she is has responded well to the treatment and is now home, continuing to recover comfortably.
This case serves as a reminder that even a mild or lingering cough in dogs can sometimes point to more serious underlying issues. Early investigation and appropriate care can make all the difference in recovery.
