Joey’s Pet of the Week – Mo’s Mysterious Malady

Howdy peeps! How have you all been? Haven’t we had some glorious sun these past few days?!? Like most felines, I love when the sun’s out! There’s no better feeling than warming yourself in the sun. In not so great news, I’m back on a diet. I ran out of my calorie controlled dry food while Nurse Layne was away and I got to eat regular food. I’ve porked up to 5.2kg again! I have been busted stealing food again since my portions have been cut back. I HATE being on a diet!!!

Yesterday was a special birthday here at GVH. Blake, Nurse Ange’s little man, turned ONE!! Can you believe he’s one already?!? Time sure is flying!! I couldn’t convince anyone that, even though he doesn’t work here, we should still have cake to celebrate Blake’s birthday. You all know I have a soft spot for cake….

Speaking of how quickly the year is going, tomorrow is the first of August, which also means the start of dental month. Four out of five dogs and cats over the age of three have some form of dental disease. The older your pet, the greater the chance that dental disease can lead to serious health problems such illnesses of the heart, liver and kidneys. Most pet owners don’t spend a lot of time looking in their furry friends mouth, so it’s often a problem you’re not aware of.  To celebrate Dental Month, we are offering free dental checks for your pet. My star this week is the handsome Mo,  a four year old Cavalier cross Shih Tzu. Mo’s parents came home to find that he had locked himself in the laundry. He was very sad and seemed to be sore in his hindlegs. When Dr Sam checked him over, he had poo stuck to his bottom  and a cut on his tail. When she clipped up his bottom and tail, Dr Sam discovered that Mo was very bruised and his tail seemed to be either dislocated or fractured. He had no feeling in his tail at all. An x-ray  showed that Mo would need to have his tail amputated as he had a nasty fracture. The nature of this fracture may mean that Mo may have some nerve damage but it will take some time for us to know this. Mo recovered well from his surgery and stayed in with us for a few days so we could make sure he could go number 2’s. Sometimes when animals have injuries to their tail it can affect their ability to defecate. Luckily for Mo , he was able to poo,( we were all every happy when he did his first poo after surgery!), so he was able to go home for lots of cuddles and TLC. We will keep checking Mo to make sure there are no permanent issues for him as a result of his injury.
