Spring has sprung: The arrival of itching
By Zoe Levesque | Dated September 29, 2026
You may have noticed that your pets have been itchier recently. This is common during spring and summer, given the increase in allergens in the air and on the ground. Seasonal skin allergies are extremely common and can present as new skin issues or worsening of known skin issues. Common signs of skin allergies include persistent scratching, licking or chewing at the skin, red or irritated areas, recurrent ear infections, and hair loss. Many animals will develop secondary skin infections as a result of self-trauma, this can present as crusting, red, moist skin and gunky, smelly ears.
While allergies cannot be cured with a single product, the signs can be managed. Often, regular brushing and bathing with animal-safe products can help remove some of the allergens from the coat and rehydrate the skin. After outdoor activities, especially in grass, wiping paws and the underside of the body with a damp cloth can remove the allergens from the skin surface.
If your pet is persistently itching, a consultation with a veterinarian is essential to ensure any secondary infection can be managed and to provide medication to keep them as comfortable as possible. With early attention and an appropriate management plan, many pets with seasonal allergies can enjoy spring without the constant itch.
