Joey has his eye on the ball
By Kay Hisano | Dated March 16, 2026
Joey, an 8-year-old Labrador, visited us this week after playing with a tennis ball which took an unfortunate turn and struck him in his eye. Immediately after, his owner noticed he was pawing at his face and keeping the eye closed, which are clear signs of discomfort, so he was brought straight into the clinic.
On examination, Dr Zoe identified traumatic bleeding inside Joey’s eye, and the pressure inside his eye was slightly higher than normal. Increased pressure can occur after trauma due to inflammation or disruption of normal fluid drainage within the eye.
Joey was started on anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation, control discomfort and help manage his eye pressure. Because eye injuries can change over the first 24 to 48 hours, he returned the following day for a recheck.
We are pleased to report that 24 hours post incident the bleeding inside Joey’s eye is already resolving and his eye pressure is improving. It’s safe to say that Joey will be taking a short break from tennis balls while his eye continues to heal.
